European Parliament Agrees that E-Bike Safety Depends on Speed, Not Power

It’s not finalized yet, but there may be a breakthrough in the European discussion on the technical rules for electric bicycles. It could mean among other things that pedelecs with assistance up to 25 km/h will be excluded from the type-approval for mopeds and motorcycles irrespective of their power output. As a result, they would be classified as bicycles, whereas today above 250 W they are considered mopeds.

Great. Now we can have half ton two wheeled behemoths on bike paths and sidewalks speeding along at 25 clicks. Basic physics equation: momentum equals weight x speed. These abominations will be injuring a lot of people.

Bad idea. now we'll have these "motorcycles" in bike lanes and city.sidewalks mowing down slower pedestrians and cyclists.
If they're going to base their definition on speed... Should be no more than 8 to 10 km. these things weigh hundreds of pounds. Momentum equals speed x weight.
