St. Catherine's - City eyes bike lane-erasing hospital parking
A recent city staff report recommends paid on-street parking on First Street by the new St. Catharines hospital, between Fourth Avenue and the CPR rail mainline. It would eliminate about 400 metres of bike lanes on the west side. Read more.
This comes as no surprise to me. A few years ago we had part of a bike lane removed as Canadian Tire complained about increased traffic.
What was never mentioned was nearby construction that slowed things down, as once they were removed things remained the same.
Also two bike lanes were planned for other roads, but one business complained and on the other road, a resident complained. Both about the loss of on-street parking.
St. Catharines has done some good, but we have a growing history of bike lane reversal policies as well.
